Is Organic Really Better?

    What started as a countercultural farming movement has now become big business: organic food sales topped $24 billion last year.

    So food grown without conventional chemical pesticides, fertilizers and lacking additives is popular despite the fact that it costs as much as 50 percent more.

    But is it really better for you and the planet?

    According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations: yes, at least as far as pesticide residues and energy use goes. Quote: "Organic agriculture already uses less fossil fuel based on inputs and has a better carbon footprint than standard agricultural practices," the said in a 2007 report.

    That's why the Obama administration is offering some $50 million in funding for farmers to go organic.

    But it doesn't seem that organic food is any more nutritious. And scientific studies have split on whether organic practices, if applied globally, could produce enough food to feed 6.7 billion people and counting.

    Remember, the organic label applies to how the food was grown. Organic certification doesn't mean your food is any safer from, say, salmonella contamination when it's packaged. Nor does it mean the food hasn't traveled halfway around the world to reach your dinner plate—another environmental no-no.

    有機(jī)食品真的就好些？

    根據(jù)聯(lián)合國(guó)糧農(nóng)組織（Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations， 簡(jiǎn)寫(xiě)為FAO）的報(bào)告，至少就殺蟲(chóng)劑殘留和能源使用而言，有機(jī)食品更加有益。2007年FAO的報(bào)告稱(chēng)：“根據(jù)能量的輸入來(lái)看，有機(jī)農(nóng)業(yè)使用更少的化石燃料，而且與常規(guī)的農(nóng)業(yè)做法相比，有機(jī)農(nóng)業(yè)留下的“碳足跡”更少（“碳足跡“實(shí)際上至二氧化碳的排放---譯者注）

    這就是為什么奧巴馬政府向美國(guó)的農(nóng)場(chǎng)主們投資500億美元以實(shí)施有機(jī)農(nóng)業(yè)的原因。

    不過(guò)有機(jī)食品似乎并不比傳統(tǒng)食品更有營(yíng)養(yǎng)。而且科學(xué)研究在有一點(diǎn)上存在分歧：那就是如果全球都實(shí)施有機(jī)農(nóng)業(yè)的做法，那么這樣的農(nóng)業(yè)方法是否能給全球67億人口（而且還在增加）提供足夠多的食物。

    請(qǐng)記住，食物上的有機(jī)標(biāo)簽只是說(shuō)明了食物是如何種植的。有機(jī)認(rèn)證并不意味這你的食物在包裝過(guò)程中就免于沙門(mén)氏菌的污染。這同樣也不意味著有機(jī)食品在達(dá)到你的餐桌之前沒(méi)有繞行半個(gè)地球---而這又是一個(gè)對(duì)環(huán)境不好的舉措。
